A Few Thoughts on Swearing

Sterling Franklin

Talking about swearing and clean communication, Ephesians 4:29 is a very good choice...

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which
is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the
hearers. (Ephesians 4:29)

Ask yourself before you speak, will this build up (edify) others?
Will it Glorify God? Will it be offensive to others, Believing or
nonBelieving?

1 Corinthians 10:23 in the Greek shows that Paul states that all ranges
of things for him are possible to do, good and bad, but not all things
are beneficial (helpful) or build up others.

Don't be a stumblingblock to other Believers. What will other
non-Christians think if you DO let one curse word slip? How do you have
any Light that they don't have?

1 Timothy 4:12 is always a good verse to live by. (By the way,
Timothy was likely in his 30s = young, and other older elders at the
time would look down on him for being that young)...

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers,
in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. (1
Timothy 4:12)

Same deal in Matthew 5, when Jesus was preaching His Sermon on the
Mount...

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

Cursing is often accompanied by anger not of God. We can be angry and
sin not, but oftentimes we find we let the anger go over the top.

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow
to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the
righteousness of God. (James 1:19-20)

Glorify the Lord in all you do. Anything that does not Glorify God is
sin.

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Colossians 3:17)

Even Wise King Solomon had something to say about this issue...

Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from
thee. (Proverbs 4:24)

We all will be judged according to our deeds, whether good or bad, and
we will be judged for every idle word that we speak. No matter how you
take on this issue, letting a bad word slip out of your mouth often
lowers your shield to other sins, causing your temptations for other
sins to enter your life.

Keep on the path that leads to Righteousness, and stray from offending
others with your crude or cursing lips. Think of the consequences
before you commit a felony in God's eyes.

If a rule in school is 'no cursing' and you break that rule and get
punished, what is that showing to others? Peter warns to be punished
for only doing right in the sight of the Lord instead of to be punished
for being caught in a wrongdoing.

For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye
shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye
take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. (1 Peter 2:20)

Just a few thoughts here and there... God bless you! ;)
